To Drink or not to Drink?

When not drinking is a social indication of weakness

One of the more sinister aspects of not drinking could be traced to the general acceptance of what a big event or party should be like and has to be like.

alcohol abuse risk

Obviously, beer leads the parade of any sporting event and if you don’t drink, you could feel that you’re suddenly not a real fan, like you are not supporting your team , as if you’re not cheering hard enough for the Cup, right?

You get to the concession stand to buy hot dogs and maybe you just don’t feel like drinking beer today, but in the corner of your mind you don’t want to be excluded or segregated. You may suspect that because of your not drinking the highly proclaimed nectar of choice, you’re losing out on the brotherly alcoholic communion of sports.  To take it a step further, the blood of Christ is represented by wine, and at a sporting event the lifeblood of the fans appears to flow from vast kegs of beer for all to cheerfully consume – or so you think.

If you take a step back and look, you can see how any event has to have some alcohol. Just imagine being a teenager or young adult for a moment and consider if you could get away scot-free by not drinking? Probably the first thing you’ll hear even from a friend is: “What’s wrong, are you sick? Don’t you feel well? Do you want me to take you home? Are you okay?” and so on.

So anybody, not naturally inclined to drink gets massively overwhelmed by the social acceptance of drinking. Just try to go to the Super Bowl or spending Christmas without drinking and you’ll see what you’re up against. Hopefully you can drink socially without falling down the slippery slope to alcoholism.

As a society, we heavily impose alcohol consumption upon our youth through ceaseless advertising that dispels any amount of reservations you might have about drinking. “Hey, drinking is cool!” the advert says. It gets repeated enough times so that it almost becomes the law of the land (an unwritten law, of course.) It just becomes the way it is.

At Narconon we understand the difficulties and dilemmas of drinking alcohol. At first, drinking appears to solve a problem and then drinking becomes the problem.

I am proud to be able to help people that have fallen into alcoholism. I know that anyone can have a fresh start  without the crutches of alcoholism and it’s good!
